Azores, Terceira Island

Landscape Photography

— Terceira Island, known as “The Lilac Island”, is part of the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Shaped by volcanoes, Terceira is a volcanic island. It has four large volcanoes, the highest of which is the dormant Santa Bárbara volcano, peaking at 1021 metres, from where you can see the island of Pico.

Terceira has several magnificent forests that make it a landscape photographer’s paradise. My favourite forest is the black forest of the Misterios Negros hike, located in the heart of the island. It has a mysterious atmosphere because the trees are small and covered in moss.

Unlike the Faroe Islands, Terceira has many different landscapes, making it a landscape photographer’s paradise. As well as its forests and volcanoes, the island is also known for its patchwork fields, particularly visible from the Serra do Cume viewpoint.
